Virtual Work for a System of Connected Rigid Bodies

853
Virtual work is a powerful method used to solve problems involving several connected rigid bodies. When the system is in equilibrium, virtual work is zero. This allows the calculation of the resulting forces when a system undergoes a virtual displacement. When attempting to analyze such a system, first, use a free-body diagram, where an independent coordinate represents the configuration of the links, and mark its deflected position resulting from the positive virtual displacement.

Planar Rigid-Body Motion

1.4K
Understanding the movement of a rigid body in planar motion involves recognizing that every particle within this body is traversing a path that maintains a consistent distance from a specific plane. This concept is fundamental in the study of physics and mechanical engineering, and it allows us to comprehend better how objects move in space.
Planar motion is typically divided into three distinct categories. The first is rectilinear translation, demonstrated by a subway train that moves along...

    Area of Science:

    • Human-Computer Interaction
    • Virtual Reality
    • Simulation Technology

    Background:

    • Human Motion Simulation (HMS) visualizes virtual agent behavior but lacks experiential insight.
    • Existing simulations do not convey the subjective experience behind agent actions, limiting decision-making depth.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • Introduce Embodied Spatial Simulation (ESS) by integrating augmented reality (AR) with HMS.
    • Enable users to create and experience "what-if" scenarios from virtual agents' perspectives in situ.
    • Explore how embodiment in simulations influences user decision-making processes.

    Main Methods:

    • Developed a proof-of-concept ESS prototype for demonstrating the concept.
    • Conducted expert walkthroughs (N=4) and a user survey (N=38) across various professions.
    • Utilized scenarios like fire evacuation planning to test the ESS prototype.

    Main Results:

    • Incorporating embodiment into simulations alters user intentions regarding simulation outcomes.
    • Users expressed greater interest in understanding the experiential basis of simulated behavior.
    • Insights gained from embodied experiences were prioritized for shaping decisions over direct solutions.

    Conclusions:

    • ESS offers a novel approach to human-centered design by prioritizing experiential understanding.
    • Embodiment in simulations can foster deeper engagement and more nuanced decision-making.
    • ESS has the potential to significantly enhance future human-centered design practices and tools.
