Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between sleep disturbance and geriatric hip fracture.
  • To compare sleep quality in patients with hip fractures versus a control group undergoing elective orthopedic surgery.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study included 180 patients (90 hip fracture, 90 controls) aged ≥65 years.
  • Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI).
  • Bone mineral density (DEXA), serum calcium, and vitamin D levels were also measured.

Main Results:

  • Hip fracture patients had significantly higher PSQI scores, indicating poorer sleep quality (p=0.005).
  • Poor sleep quality (PSQI >5) was more prevalent in the fracture group (73.3% vs 33.3%, p<0.001).
  • Lower serum calcium levels were observed in the fracture group (p<0.001).

Conclusions:

  • Geriatric patients with hip fractures exhibit poorer sleep quality compared to controls.
  • Screening for sleep problems may identify high-risk individuals for fall prevention strategies.
  • Sleep quality is a modifiable factor that could be targeted in geriatric fall prevention.
