Objective:
To analyse the opportunities for cross-sectoral work within the urban regeneration programme «Quiero mi Barrio» (PQMB) in promoting health in Chile.
Design:
A qualitative, descriptive and exploratory study was conducted from a phenomenological perspective in three neighbourhoods undergoing intervention.
Location:
Three regions of Chile (Metropolitan, Araucanía, and Los Lagos), including community representatives, neighbourhood team professionals, and primary health care professionals.
Participants:
Seventeen key actors linked to the PQMB at the local, regional, and national levels.
Methods:
Semi-structured interviews, transcribed and analysed by thematic content, with triangulation among researchers.
Results:
The interdisciplinary work of the PQMB shows opportunities to act on social determinants of health and health promotion, conceiving the neighbourhood as an integral territorial unit. In the socio-health crisis, the PQMB represented a community platform for articulating the neighbourhood with public socio-health protection institutions. The PQMB collaborates with the health sector mainly in promotion and prevention, providing neighbourhood infrastructure for self-care and social strengthening activities. However, there is a lack of integrated territorial planning between sectors at the local and strategic policy levels, which translates into scarce resources for local intersectoral work.
Conclusion:
Participatory intersectoral planning with common goals should be considered to address the challenges of the territory in terms of the well-being and health of the members of the neighbourhood territorial unit in Chile.
