Background:

The Evidence Based QUality Improvement and Patient Safety (EQUIPS) Research Network aims to set research priorities for the Irish healthcare system.
Previous research prioritisation has treated quality improvement (QI) and patient safety as separate fields.
An integrated approach is needed to understand the continuum of knowledge generation and translation in quality and safety.

Purpose of the Study:

To co-create a Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Research Conceptual Framework for the Irish context.
To outline key topics, research questions, and methodologies for healthcare quality and safety.
To inform the development of a harmonised conceptual framework through a scoping literature review.

Main Methods:

Conduct a scoping review following JBI guidelines and co-create protocols with knowledge users.
Search databases (Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Web of Science) from 2000-2025 for literature from developed countries.
Report findings using PRISMA extension for Scoping Reviews and the GRIPP2 checklist for patient and public involvement.

Main Results:

The review will examine existing QI and patient safety research frameworks.
Identified frameworks will inform the development of a harmonised conceptual framework for Ireland.
Findings will be disseminated to guide research priority setting, measurement, implementation, and knowledge translation.

Conclusions:

A harmonised conceptual framework is essential for integrated QI and patient safety research in Ireland.
This framework will guide research priority setting, measurement, and knowledge translation activities.
The co-creation process ensures relevance and applicability across all healthcare areas.
