Depth Perception and Spatial Vision01:15

Depth Perception and Spatial Vision

2.7K
Depth perception is the ability to perceive objects three-dimensionally. It relies on two types of cues: binocular and monocular. Binocular cues depend on the combination of images from both eyes and how the eyes work together. Since the eyes are in slightly different positions, each eye captures a slightly different image. This disparity between images, known as binocular disparity, helps the brain interpret depth. When the brain compares these images, it determines the distance to an object.

    Summary
    This summary is machine-generated.

BeamStellar offers low-latency head tracking for Beaming Displays (BDs) by using passive glasses with an infrared LED array and a position-sensitive detector. This novel approach overcomes limitations of traditional Augmented Reality (AR) head-mounted displays.

    Area of Science:

    • Computer Science
    • Optical Engineering
    • Human-Computer Interaction

    Background:

    • Conventional Augmented Reality (AR) head-mounted displays (HMDs) face limitations in weight, heat, and battery life due to integrated components.
    • Beaming Displays (BDs) externalize computation and projection to overcome HMD constraints, but struggle with reliable low-latency six-degrees-of-freedom (6-DoF) tracking.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To present BeamStellar, a novel Beaming Display (BD) system designed for low-latency 6-DoF head tracking.
    • To address the challenge of achieving precise and rapid tracking in externalized AR systems.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized a position-sensitive detector (PSD) combined with a spatio-temporally modulated infrared LED array on passive glasses.
    • Integrated tracking and projection through a co-aligned optical path.
    • Implemented real-time signal processing on a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) to minimize latency.

    Main Results:

    • Achieved an approximate pose-tracking latency of 430 μs.
    • Demonstrated a functional BD system with integrated tracking and projection.
    • Validated the effectiveness of the PSD and modulated LED array for precise head tracking.

    Conclusions:

    • BeamStellar establishes a new paradigm for low-latency, environment-based AR systems.
    • The system offers a replicable and lightweight platform for advanced AR tracking.
    • Overcame critical latency challenges in Beaming Display technology.
