More than a functional match: longitudinal patterns on person-centered assistive technology

This descriptive study examines assistive technology (AT) needs and patterns of use through a review of data collected via the Assistive Technology Device Predisposition Assessment (ATD PA), a component of the Matching Person and Technology (MPT) model and assessment process. The ATD PA explores user perspectives and emphasizes the importance of person-centered assessment in rehabilitation education and practice, calling for its broader integration across disciplines.

Graduate students enrolled in a rehabilitation technology course at San Diego State University administered the ATD PA with individuals identifying as potential AT users (n = 193). Students conducted structured interviews to collect data on functioning, satisfaction, personal characteristics, and person-device match, which were then analyzed for longitudinal trends from 2007 to 2022.

Most individuals anticipated stable or reduced support needs over time. Strong associations were identified between autonomy, emotional well-being, and satisfaction across life domains. Devices were rated most favorably when aligned with user goals, routines, and environments. Social and environmental fit emerged as critical to perceived success.

Survey analysis indicated consistent trends over time and suggests the model as an effective strategy for person-centered AT assessment and measurement-based service provision for enhancing professional training in disability and rehabilitation contexts.
