Hydrogen Sulphide Signalling in Plants: From Persulfidation to Metabolic Regulation and Stress Response

Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) is a gaseous signalling molecule that plays an active role in plant growth and stress responses. In this review, we summarise the synthesis and metabolism of H2S, recent progress in H2S research on stress and plant growth, and discuss the modes of action of H2S. Many studies have demonstrated that H2S exhibits a hormetic effect, that suitable concentrations of H2S actively regulate the development of various species through a conserved mechanism. H2S affects multiple growth stages of plants and alleviates oxidative damage, photosynthetic inhibition, and homoeostasis abnormalities in stress responses, primarily through transcriptional and post-translational regulation. In addition, we present unresolved problems and the H2S applicational significance.
