Neutrophils in Rat Dorsal Root Ganglion during Acute Systemic Inflammation

Abstract:
It is known that systemic inflammation is a predisposing and accelerating factor in the development of neuropathic pain. Nevertheless, the response of immune cells, specifically neutrophils, in the dorsal root ganglia (DRG) to systemic inflammation has not yet been studied. We examined the distribution and localization of neutrophils in rat DRG during experimental acute systemic inflammation induced by injection of a bacterial endotoxin. It was found that systemic inflammation promotes neutrophil infiltration into the rat DRG, both in the region of neuronal cell bodies and in neurite-rich areas.
