Introduction:
Hospital design significantly influences the quality of work and the mental well-being of healthcare professionals. Thoughtfully designed spaces can reduce stress, improve satisfaction, and enhance overall productivity.
Materials And Methods:
A cross-sectional study was conducted at selected hospitals in Punjab to assess healthcare professionals' satisfaction with work quality and mental well-being in relation to hospital design. A total of 145 participants were involved through a nonprobability convenience sampling technique. Data were collected using a predesigned demographic profile and a self-structured five-point Likert scale. The scale, comprising 35 items across six domains, was developed through a literature review and expert validation. The scale includes domains including architectural and spatial design, environmental comfort, esthetic and psychological impact, functional support and accessibility, impact on work quality and patient care, and level of impact on mental well-being.
Results:
Out of 145 participants, 33.8% were aged 31-40 years, 69.7% were female, and 53.8% were unmarried. The majority were nurses (71%), and 37.9% had more than 10 years of experience. Satisfaction with hospital design domains was generally moderate across all domains, with the highest satisfaction observed in esthetic and psychological impact (mean = 21.19 ± 4.36) and the lowest in functional support and accessibility (mean = 16.11 ± 4.76). Regarding mental well-being, 48.3% reported moderate impact (mean = 15.37 ± 4.72). Significant correlations were found between architectural and spatial design and environmental comfort (r = 0.76), esthetic impact (r = 0.80), and functional support (r = 0.68), all significant at P < 0.01. No significant demographic differences were found across all the domains.
Conclusion:
The findings underscore that hospital design plays a pivotal role in job satisfaction and mental well-being, emphasizing the need for evidence-based strategies to improve workplace environments.
