Behavior Therapy01:22

Behavior Therapy

972
Behavior therapy incorporates diverse techniques rooted in classical conditioning principles to address maladaptive behaviors and anxiety disorders. These methods aim to reduce avoidance behaviors, foster adaptive coping mechanisms, and alter associations between stimuli and responses, making them effective in a wide range of therapeutic contexts.
Exposure therapy is a cornerstone of behavioral treatment for anxiety disorders. It involves systematic exposure to feared stimuli, either in real...

Psychosexual Stages of Personality: Oral01:16

Psychosexual Stages of Personality: Oral

3.8K
The oral stage is the initial phase of Sigmund Freud's theory of psychosexual development, occurring from birth to approximately 12 to 18 months. During this period, the infant's mouth serves as the primary source of pleasure, with actions such as sucking, chewing, biting, and drinking playing a crucial role in reducing tension. These activities are essential not only for nourishment but also for the infant's psychological and emotional satisfaction.
Weaning, typically occurring...

Male Sexual Response: Erection & Ejaculation

28.4K
Sexual stimulation can take various forms, such as physical touch and visual or auditory cues. When this happens, the parasympathetic reflex in the sacral portion of the spinal cord is activated. This reflex stimulates the release of nitric oxide (NO), which then dilates the arterioles in the penis, increasing blood flow to the erectile tissues - the corpora cavernosa and corpus spongiosum.
The blood filling the erectile tissues compresses the veins, which helps to prevent blood from leaving...

Modeling in Therapy01:26

Modeling in Therapy

736
Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.
Participant Modeling
Participant modeling involves therapists demonstrating calm and effective behaviors in...

Operant Conditioning Intervention01:24

Operant Conditioning Intervention

663
Operant conditioning serves as a foundational principle in therapeutic interventions aimed at modifying maladaptive behaviors. Central to this approach is the notion that behaviors, both adaptive and maladaptive, are learned through reinforcement. By analyzing the environmental factors that reinforce problematic behaviors, clinicians can design interventions to weaken these reinforcements and replace maladaptive behaviors with healthier alternatives.
In operant conditioning, behaviors that are...

Summary

Gum-chewing therapy (GCT) and biofeedback therapy (BFT) both improved lifelong premature ejaculation (LPE) outcomes. GCT offers a simple, low-cost, non-pharmacological option for LPE management.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Sexual Health
  • Behavioral Therapy

Background:

  • Lifelong premature ejaculation (LPE) significantly impacts quality of life.
  • Current LPE treatments have limitations, necessitating exploration of novel approaches.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy of gum-chewing therapy (GCT) and biofeedback therapy (BFT) for treating lifelong premature ejaculation (LPE).

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial involving 75 patients with LPE (PEDT score >11, IELT <60 seconds).
  • Patients were assigned to either GCT (n=39) or BFT (n=36).
  • Intravaginal ejaculatory latency time (IELT) and Premature Ejaculation Diagnostic Tool (PEDT) scores were assessed at 1 and 3 months.

Main Results:

  • Both GCT and BFT groups showed significant improvements in IELT and PEDT scores (p < 0.001).
  • While numerical improvements favored GCT, no statistically significant intergroup differences were observed.
  • 61 patients (33 GCT, 28 BFT) completed the study.

Conclusions:

  • Gum-chewing therapy (GCT) is a viable, simple, discreet, and cost-effective non-pharmacological treatment for lifelong premature ejaculation (LPE).
  • Further research may explore GCT's long-term effectiveness and broader applicability.
