Abstract:
Norovirus is an important cause of acute gastroenteritis; vaccines to protect against norovirus illness are in development. In February 2025, we surveyed a representative sample of 4204 U.S. adults to assess attitudes towards norovirus vaccination. Overall, 38% said they would likely get a norovirus vaccine if available, 27% were unsure, and 35% were unlikely to get one. Among adults aged 65+, 54% were likely to vaccinate. Norovirus vaccine acceptance for was similar to COVID and RSV vaccines, and slightly lower than a flu vaccine. Among unsure and unlikely groups, side effects and distrust in the government or pharmaceutical companies contributed to vaccine hesitancy, and evidence of vaccine safety was the top motivator for vaccination. Healthcare provider recommendation was the top motivator among those likely to vaccinate. Our findings suggest public education on norovirus and communication on the benefits and safety of a norovirus vaccine are likely needed to promote uptake.
