Background:
Although adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with compromised sleep health, uncertainties remain regarding sex- and age differences in this association among children. Additionally, the role of resilience and its interaction with ACEs in sleep duration remains understudied.
Objective:
To explore the relationship between ACEs and sleep duration across ages 6 months to 12 years, considering variations by sex and age, and to determine the main effect of resilience as well as its interaction with ACEs on sleep duration.
Participants And Setting:
Data were collected from 16,666 children aged 6 months to 12 years from the Taiwan Birth Cohort Study.
Methods:
Multilevel growth curve models were used to investigate the relationship of ACEs, resilience, and their interaction with sleep duration. Interaction terms were added to evaluate sex and age differences.
Results:
ACEs were associated with decreased sleep duration (b = -0.04, P<.001), with sex- and age variations. Boys exhibit a heightened vulnerability to ACEs compared to girls and the impact of ACEs was most significant between ages 3 and 8. Although resilience positively correlated with sleep duration (b = 0.001, P<.001), its protective effect diminished in the presence of ACEs.
Conclusions:
ACEs may shorten sleep duration and mitigate the positive effects of resilience, with notable sex and age differences. Interventions aimed at enhancing sleep duration should account for the interplay between ACEs and resilience, in addition to potential sex and age differences.
