Summary

Classic pelvic features, once thought to indicate childbirth, do not reliably predict parity in women. These skeletal markers are more associated with sex than with a history of pregnancy or childbirth.

  • Previous studies relied on archaeological samples lacking detailed reproductive histories, limiting definitive conclusions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between parity and specific pelvic features in a clinical sample of women with documented reproductive histories.
  • To compare these findings with a male sample.
  • To evaluate the relationship between parity and urinary incontinence.

Main Methods:

  • CT scans of 84 individuals (39 parous women, 20 nulliparous women, 25 men) were analyzed for five pelvic features.
  • Reproductive history and urinary incontinence data were collected.
  • Nonparametric tests, chi-squared tests, and age-adjusted logistic regression were used for analysis.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in individual pelvic features were found between parous and nulliparous women; features were primarily sex-associated.
  • The preauricular sulcus was present in about half of all women but absent in men.
  • Urinary incontinence was more common in parous women and remained associated with parity after age adjustment.

Conclusions:

  • Traditional skeletal pelvic features lack the specificity to reliably indicate pregnancy or childbirth.
  • These features cannot be used as definitive predictors of parity.
