Oculoplastic Surgery Knowledge among Ophthalmology Residents. A Saudi Survey-based Study

Background:
Oculoplastic surgery is a valuable subspecialty in the field of ophthalmology due to the combined functional and esthetic outcomes of treatment for the eyelid, orbit, lacrimal system, and periorbital structures. While the emphasis on clinical and cosmetic applications of oculoplastic surgery continues to increase, awareness and structured training in the field remain limited within ophthalmology residency programs in Saudi Arabia.
Objective:
The objective of this study was to assess the knowledge, exposure, and perceived value of oculoplastic surgery among ophthalmology residents in Saudi Arabia.
Materials And Methods:
A cross-sectional survey of 102 Saudi Board of Ophthalmology residents, representing 42.7% of the national population, was conducted. A validated 31-item questionnaire was used to collect data, which were subsequently analyzed using SPSS v26. Descriptive statistics and inferential tests (t-test, ANOVA) were used to investigate associations between sociodemographic variables and participants' knowledge scores.
Results:
The majority of residents (87.3%) demonstrated a good level of knowledge in oculoplastic surgery, with a mean overall score of 13.55 ± 3.37 out of 20. Residents showed a strong understanding of core procedures (i.e., orbital fracture repair, eyelid removal for skin cancer), but there were essential knowledge gaps (i.e., management of thyroid eye disease, surgical prioritization, etc.). Participants' knowledge scores were statistically significant for region of residence (P = 0.004) and training level (P = 0.020). Residents varied widely in training exposure (1-156 weeks). Although the majority of residents (80.4%) were satisfied with their training, they cited barriers to participation (limited accessibility to consultants and cases). The majority of participants (66.7%) recommended additional training time, with some concern about reduced exposure to other subspecialties.
Conclusion:
The overall baseline level of knowledge regarding oculoplastic surgery among ophthalmology residents in Saudi Arabia was at least good, but specific misconceptions were identified. Improved and standardized exposure across training programs could address these gaps and better prepare residents for multidisciplinary care in oculoplastic surgery.
