Background:

Sexual coercion (SC) is a complex issue within intimate relationships.
Understanding the prevalence and correlates of SC in batterer populations is crucial for effective intervention.
Previous research has not fully explored SC as an abusive dynamic leveraging relationship history.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine the rates and correlates of sexual coercion among men in batterer treatment programs.
To reframe sexual coercion as an abusive dynamic that utilizes relationship history.
To examine the role of sexual coercion within broader patterns of coercive control.

Main Methods:

Mixed-methods approach combining quantitative and qualitative data.
Utilized the Multidimensional Sexual Coercion (MSCQ) scale for detailed assessment.
Included 137 men remanded to a batterer treatment program.

Main Results:

Fifty-six percent of participants reported engaging in some form of sexual coercion.
Approximately one-quarter of those engaging in SC did so more than twenty times.
Sexual coercion was identified as a tactic within the broader context of coercive control.

Conclusions:

Sexual coercion is a significant issue within batterer populations.
Reframing SC as a relational dynamic offers new insights into its perpetration.
Further research is needed to explore identification and intervention strategies for SC within coercive control frameworks.
