High-efficiency blue organic light-emitting diodes were developed using a hybrid emitting layer. This approach enhances triplet utilization and reduces energy loss, achieving record external quantum efficiency for polymer-based devices.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Organic Electronics
- Photophysics
Background:
- Solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes (SOLEDs) struggle with efficient, pure-blue emission due to triplet loss and interfacial energy barriers.
- Existing technologies face limitations in triplet utilization and charge injection, hindering performance.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop high-efficiency, color-pure blue hyperfluorescent (HF) SOLEDs.
- To address challenges in triplet harvesting and interfacial energy loss in blue SOLEDs.
Main Methods:
- Fabrication of a hybrid emitting layer using a polymeric thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) sensitizer and a narrowband multiresonance TADF emitter.
- Incorporation of self-organized polymeric hole injection layers.
- Characterization of device performance, including external quantum efficiency (EQE).
Main Results:
- Achieved a record external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 32.7% for polymer-based blue SOLEDs.
- Demonstrated efficient triplet harvesting and reverse intersystem crossing via the polymer sensitizer.
- Reduced aggregation and interfacial exciton loss through the hybrid layer and hole injection layers.
Conclusions:
- A polymer-sensitized blue HF SOLED was successfully demonstrated.
- The hybrid emitting layer and improved hole injection provide a generalizable strategy for high-efficiency SOLED platforms.
- This work advances the development of efficient and stable blue organic light-emitting diodes.
