  • No prior national environmental surveys of these specialized PRT programs have been reported.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To conduct a comprehensive national environmental survey of specialized Palliative Radiation Oncology Programs (PROP) in Canada.
  • To understand the current status, goals, operational models, and team composition of PRT programs.

Main Methods:

  • A national survey was distributed via email with a web-based link to 44 radiation therapy (RT) centers.
  • The survey utilized open-ended and multiple-choice questions to gather data on program goals, patient volumes, indications, capacity, schedules, and team composition.
  • Aggregate, anonymized responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics.

Main Results:

  • The response rate was 81.8% (36/44 centers).
  • Currently, 38.9% of centers operate a PROP, 47.2% have never had one, and 13.9% had a program that closed.
  • Key program goals include expediting appointments, symptom management, advanced care planning, and supporting caregivers. Bone and brain metastases are common referrals. Most sites reserve simulation and treatment slots, with many operating several half-days per week.

Conclusions:

  • Dedicated PRT clinics deliver essential team-based, personalized care for cancer patients.
  • Multidisciplinary collaboration, local champions, and leadership engagement are crucial for the success of these PRT programs.
  • These programs contribute to a national community of practice in palliative radiation oncology.
