Enhanced Left Ventricular Diastolic Function Following Diabetic Foot Treatment: A Prospective Observational Study

Background And Aims:
Diabetes mellitus increases the incidence of diabetic foot syndrome and its concomitant cardiovascular complications, notably diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM). Approximately 15% of diabetic individuals experience Diabetic Foot Syndrome (DFS), significantly elevating mortality rates. This study evaluates the impact of diabetic foot treatment on cardiac diastolic function in patients with DCM.
Methods:
A prospective observational study was conducted on 62 diabetic patients with confirmed DFS. An initial echocardiography assessment was performed before treatment. Comprehensive echocardiographic assessments of left ventricular diastolic function were performed before and 3 months after diabetic foot treatment. Diastolic function parameters were analyzed.
Results:
Post-treatment, there was a significant improvement in diastolic function indices, including increased normal left ventricular ejection fraction, reduced left and right atrial volume indices, and enhanced Doppler-derived diastolic parameters. These findings indicate an overall improvement in cardiac diastolic status following the resolution of DFS.
Conclusion:
Diabetic foot syndrome is associated with impaired diastolic function due to diabetic cardiomyopathy. Echocardiography, particularly assessing left atrial volume index, can detect early diastolic changes, potentially improving outcomes and reducing cardiovascular risk. Treatment of diabetic foot syndrome can enhance diastolic function, indicating cardiac benefits. Therefore, echocardiography is valuable for early detection and management of diabetic cardiomyopathy in this population.
