Sit-to-Stand Desk Converters Decrease Sedentary Time and Increase Standing Time in Young Adults: A Randomized

Objective:
As most sedentary time is accumulated during working hours, strategies to reduce these unhealthy postures are needed. This study evaluated the impact of a 4-week standing desk converter intervention on postures and physical activity in adults.
Methods:
Thirty-four participants were randomized into intervention (n=24; 16f; 22±3yrs) and/or usual-activity-control groups (n=21; 13f; 21±3yrs). ActivPAL was worn pre/post for 5.4±0.9-d to assess posture and activity.
Results:
Sedentary time decreased for intervention (12.2±2.9 to 9.1±3.2hrs/day) compared to control (10.7±2.6 to 12.2±3.7hrs/day, p<0.001). Standing increased for intervention (3.1±1.8 to 5.7±2.5hrs/day) compared to control (4.0±2.2 to 3.3±2.0hrs/day, p<0.001). No differences observed for physical activity or sit-to-stand measures: transitions or velocity (all, p>0.27).
Conclusions:
Standing desk converters reduce sedentary time and increase standing time in adults, highlighting a practical approach to promoting healthier postural patterns in everyday settings.
