Abstract:
Objective: In this study, we aim to elucidate how cardiovascular disease influences short-term prognosis in bowel obstruction in terms of mortality and duration of hospitalization. Methods: In order to clarify these unresolved issues, we conducted a retrospective cohort study, including 186 patients who underwent surgical treatment for bowel obstruction in an emergency hospital between the 1st of January 2019 and the 31st of December 2022. Results: The total number of cardiovascular disease diagnoses and the revised cardiac risk index score were independent predictors of in-hospital mortality and time to in-hospital death. Of all individual cardiovascular diagnoses considered in the present study, only heart failure was an independent predictor of in-hospital death. Conclusion: Cardiovascular disease history, and especially high cardiovascular comorbidity, as well as revised cardiac risk index are associated with in-hospital mortality in patients with bowel obstruction.
