Submucosal tunneling endoscopic resection to treat a large symptomatic esophageal lipoma

Background And Aims:
The presence of a submucosal lesion in the esophagus is very rare and for the most part is an incidental finding. If there is a probability for malignancy or if it is symptomatic, the lesion should be removed.
Methods:
We present a case report of a 62-year-old man with a known submucosal lipoma of the distal third of the esophagus. We decided to perform submucosal tunneling endoscopic resection because of its minor invasiveness and the soft nature of the tumor.
Results:
We managed to extract an 8-cm-long lipoma, without major adverse events.
Conclusions:
Submucosal tunneling endoscopic resection is a safe and effective procedure, which preserves the mucosal integrity and shortens the recovery time.
