Minimizing non-orthogonality in homodyne interferometers with a continuously tunable phase-shifted triple-channel
Abstract:
Traditional multi-channel configuration in homodyne interferometers introduces phase shifts with wave plates to generate a pair of quadrature sinusoidal signals. However, orthogonality deviations inevitably exist due to imperfections in PBS/NPBS. This Letter proposes a tunable phase-shifted triple-channel optical configuration that enables continuous phase-shift adjustment over [-π, π] despite component imperfections. By differencing π/2 + Δφ, 0 + Δφ, and π + Δφ phase signals with the electric circuit, a pair of sinusoidal signals with good orthogonality and suppressed DC offset was obtained. Experiments showed orthogonality better than 0.03°, nonlinear error in the original signal <0.6 nm, and the nonlinear error can be further reduced to <0.03 nm after correction of residual DC offset.

Phase Contrast and Differential Interference Contrast Microscopy
In-phase-contrast microscopes, interference between light directly passing through a cell and light refracted by cellular components is used to create high-contrast, high-resolution images without staining. It is the oldest and simplest type of microscope that creates an image by altering the wavelengths of light rays passing through the specimen. Altered wavelength paths are created using an annular stop in the condenser. The annular stop produces a hollow cone of...

Interference: Path Lengths
Two special sources may be considered when they are in phase. This can be easily achieved by feeding the two sources from the same source. An example would be synchronizing the two speakers by feeding them with the same source, such as the sound waves produced by a tuning fork. This setup ensures that the two sources have the same frequency and are...
