The Turkish Version of the Perceived Stressors in Intensive Care Units Scale: A Validity and Reliability Study

Background and Purpose: Nursing is a profession that encompasses a wide range of services. Adult intensive care units, where nurses provide specialized care, are among the settings with high levels of occupational stress. The "Perceived Stressors Scale in Intensive Care Units" is designed to assess the stress levels of nurses working in adult intensive care units. This study aims to examine the validity and reliability of its Turkish version. Methods: In the study, data were collected from 300 intensive care nurses who worked in the adult intensive care units of six hospitals and volunteered to participate in the study. The data were analyzed using SPSS 22.0 and LISREL 8.8. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, coefficient alpha analysis, and the Pearson correlation analysis were utilized in the data analysis. Results: The coefficient alpha of the Perceived Stressors Scale in Intensive Care Units was found to be .96. The content validity index of the scale was .912. Confirmatory factor analysis on the original form showed that all item factor loadings were above .402, but items were observed to be randomly distributed into different subdimensions compared to the original form. Therefore, the Turkish version of the scale was accepted as unidimensional. Conclusions: The Perceived Stressors Scale in Intensive Care Units has been determined to be a valid and reliable measurement tool for assessing the stress experienced by nurses working in Turkish adult intensive care units.
