Medium-Term Preservation by the In Vitro Minimum Growth Method of Gmelina arborea Roxb

Abstract:
Gmelina arborea Roxb., commonly known as Melina, is a fast-growing, commercially important tropical forest species widely used in reforestation programs for timber, pulp and paper production, and other uses. Its adaptability to diverse site conditions and high productivity make it attractive for industrial plantations. Due to its importance, species conservation is essential. Plant tissue culture is a biotechnological tool for the propagation and conservation of forest species, allowing the production of plants with uniform genetic characteristics and high growth potential in a short period of time. One strategy is the minimum growth protocol for medium-term conservation (from 9 months to 2 years). These protocols aim to reduce the metabolic rate of explants, decreasing the frequency of manipulation due to the prolonged subculture time, minimizing the risk of contamination, and minimizing costs. This type of in vitro conservation ensures the availability of important genetic material for future use in reforestation or conservation programs.
