Background:

Emergency department (ED) overcrowding and flow management are persistent global challenges.
Effective ED management requires strong non-technical skills like teamwork, communication, and systems thinking.
Traditional training methods may not fully address these complex operational dynamics.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the effectiveness of the GridlockED tabletop simulation game as an educational tool for ED flow management.
To assess participant satisfaction, perceived realism, and learning gains in a workshop setting.
To identify challenges and opportunities for adapting simulation games for diverse healthcare contexts.

Main Methods:

Program evaluation of two workshops held at French medical conferences in 2025.
Utilized the GridlockED tabletop simulation game with 46 healthcare professionals.
Post-session surveys assessed satisfaction, realism, language accessibility, and self-reported learning.

Main Results:

High overall participant satisfaction and perceived learning gains were reported.
Participants demonstrated improved identification of operational barriers within ED flow.
Team communication was the lowest-rated competency, and English language posed a moderate barrier for French speakers.
