Farewell to a dying child: Turkish mothers' experiences in pediatric intensive care units-A qualitative study

This study aims to explore Turkish mothers' lived experiences during the farewell process in the PICU, particularly focusing on the emotional, relational, and cultural meanings they attribute to the farewell process.

This study employed a descriptive phenomenological design grounded in Husserlian philosophy, using Colaizzi's method for data analysis in 2024. Twenty-five mothers were participated in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) of a hospital in Ankara, Türkiye. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and non-interventional observations, which were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using MAXQDA version 10.

The coding and analysis of the data generated one main theme, four subthemes, and eleven categories. The main theme of enduring love in the face of loss is supported by subthemes such as the complex farewell process, emotional challenges, inner strength and spiritual growth, and the importance of support in coping with grief.

This study underscores the emotional complexities mothers face when saying goodbye to a child, highlighting the importance of support, resilience, and hope. Nurses play a crucial role in supporting by providing compassionate care, validating emotions, and fostering trust through clear communication and expert guidance.

PICU nurses play a vital role in shaping mothers' farewell experiences by supporting physical closeness, memory-making, and honest, compassionate communication. Nurses should provide proactive emotional support, flexible family-centered care, and referrals to psychosocial services, while recognizing mothers' pain, helplessness, and dual responsibilities. Attention to spiritual needs and culturally sensitive care can enhance holistic care in the PICU.
