In this issue of Neuron, Ramirez et al. identify a mechanism through which astrocytes and microglia interact to refine developing thalamocortical circuits. The C-terminal fragment of astrocyte-derived Hevin binds microglial TLR4, inducing TLR2 expression and increasing synaptic phagocytosis. This astrocyte-microglial crosstalk is essential for the refinement of synapses in the developing brain.
