Tight junctions in choroid plexus papillomas.

    Summary

Electron microscopy revealed that choroid plexus papilloma (CPP) shares tight junction characteristics with normal choroid plexus (CP). This suggests a blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier exists in both conditions.

    Area of Science:

    • Neuroscience
    • Pathology
    • Cell Biology

    Background:

    • Choroid plexus (CP) forms the blood-cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) barrier.
    • The barrier function of choroid plexus papilloma (CPP) is not well understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the ultrastructural characteristics of CPP.
    • To compare the tight junctions in CPP with normal CP to assess barrier function.

    Main Methods:

    • Electron microscopy was used to examine four surgical samples of CPP.
    • Normal CP from mice and chicks served as controls.

    Main Results:

    • Apical tight junctions in CPP showed fusion of the two outer leaflets of the adjacent cytoplasmic membrane, similar to normal CP.
    • This ultrastructural similarity indicates comparable barrier mechanisms.

    Conclusions:

    • The findings suggest that a blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier is present in choroid plexus papilloma.
    • CPP may maintain barrier properties similar to normal choroid plexus, impacting its biological behavior and treatment.
