This study found no significant link between vitamin D receptor gene variations and periodontitis risk. Further research is needed to understand the complex relationship between vitamin D and this common gum disease.
Area of Science:
- Genetics and Oral Health
- Molecular Biology
- Immunology
Background:
- Vitamin D plays a crucial role in bone metabolism and immune function.
- Vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene polymorphisms have been suggested to influence susceptibility to periodontitis.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between specific VDR gene polymorphisms (Fok1, Apa1, Bsm1, Taq1) and periodontitis.
- To determine if VDR gene variations impact the risk of developing periodontitis.
Main Methods:
- A case-control study involving 51 periodontitis patients and 51 controls.
- DNA analysis using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs).
- Statistical analysis using SPSS, SNPStats, Chi-square, and t-tests.
Main Results:
- No significant differences in allelic or genotype frequencies of VDR gene polymorphisms (TaqI, ApaI, BsmI, FokI) were observed between periodontitis cases and controls.
- Haplotype analysis did not reveal a significant association with periodontitis.
Conclusions:
- The study found no significant association between the investigated VDR gene polymorphisms and periodontitis.
- The role of VDR gene variations in periodontitis susceptibility remains inconclusive based on this study.
