The Correlation Between Patients' Satisfaction and the Quality of Porcelain Fused to Metal and All Ceramic
Purpose:
Patient satisfaction with dental restorations is influenced by functional outcomes, aesthetics, comfort, and longevity. However, limited evidence compares the quality of PFM and all-ceramic restorations with patient satisfaction. This study examines the correlation between patients' satisfaction and the quality of PFM and all-ceramic restorations.
Materials And Methods:
A clinical examination was conducted on 100 patients using the modified USPHS evaluation criteria. Patients completed a questionnaire assessing sociodemographic factors, oral health habits, restoration characteristics, and overall satisfaction. Chi-square and Pearson correlation tests were used to analyze the data (P < 0.05).
Results:
Of the 100 patients, 62 had PFM restorations and 38 had zirconia/all-ceramic restorations. Satisfaction was reported by 84% of patients. Zirconia/all-ceramic restorations had significantly higher satisfaction (P = 0.02). Satisfaction correlated with anatomical form (P = 0.0001), marginal integrity (P = 0.0004), postoperative sensitivity (P = 0.0001), secondary caries (P = 0.03), and bleeding on probing (P = 0.0001). Bad odor was associated with poor marginal adaptation (P = 0.00), loss of restoration integrity (P = 0.017), and bleeding (P = 0.001).
Conclusion:
Zirconia/all-ceramic restorations led to higher satisfaction compared to PFM restorations made off base metal alloys. Factors like marginal fit, anatomical form, and oral hygiene significantly impacted satisfaction.
Clinical Implications:
Clinicians should focus on providing high-quality restorations to improve patient satisfaction.
