Background:

  • Virtual reality (VR) is emerging as a tool to enhance patient comprehension of disease and mitigate perioperative stress.
  • 360-degree VR models offer a novel approach to patient education in surgical consultations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess patient perceptions of 360-degree VR models for demonstrating anatomy, pathology, and surgical approach during spine surgery consultations.
  • Evaluate patient understanding, comfort, satisfaction, and perceived value of VR-based demonstrations.

Main Methods:

  • Patient-specific, 3D VR models were created using the ConveyXR system from preoperative CT or MRI images.
  • A Likert-style questionnaire assessed patient experiences regarding understanding, comfort, satisfaction, and value.
  • Twenty-five patients participated in VR-enhanced consultations between 2019-2023.

  • Larger comparative studies are warranted to assess VR's impact on clinical outcomes.
