Burnout among Ghanaian radiographers - A nationwide study

Introduction:
Occupational burnout among radiographers could have several negative implications. Although several studies have evaluated burnout among radiographers globally, to the best of our knowledge, there are no studies on radiographers working in Ghana. This study therefore aimed to investigate the levels of burnout among Ghanaian radiographers and to assess the demographic factors influencing them.
Methods:
This quantitative cross-sectional study included 146 participants. The 22-item Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey for Medical Personnel was used to measure the burnout levels. The data were analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (version 27). Descriptive statistics, Mann Whitney U, and Kruskal-Wallis tests were performed to assess group differences.
Results:
The participants [males = 96 (65.8%), females = 50 (34.2%)], were aged between 22 and 59 years (mean = 31 ± 7.3 years). The participants' years of work experience ranged from 1 to 34 years (mean = 6.4 ± 6.5 years). The mean and standard deviation for emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation, and personal accomplishment were 29.6 ± 12.5, 27.6 ± 3.0, and 22.1 ± 7.6, respectively. The prevalence of high emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation, and low personal accomplishment were 58.2% (n = 85/146), 100% (n = 146/146), and 84.2% (n = 123/146), respectively. Emotional exhaustion was influenced by marital status and hospital ownership, with married radiographers, and those working in public hospitals recording higher levels of emotional exhaustion.
Conclusion:
Ghanaian radiographers recorded high levels of burnout which was reflected in high levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation, and a low level of personal accomplishment.
Implications For Practice:
The high occupational burnout levels among Ghanaian radiographers could negatively affect their job performance and lead to adverse patient outcomes. Structured peer-support programmes, equipment maintenance policies, workload audits, and leadership training aimed at reducing burnout among Ghanaian radiographers are needed.
