Resilience, not presence of meaning, predicts lower depression among secondary vocational school students: A
1Department of Medical Psychology, School of Health Humanities, Peking University, Beijing, China.
Background:
Secondary vocational school students face significant academic, social, and career-related stressors, placing them at elevated risk for depression. While resilience and the presence of meaning in life (P-MIL) are recognized as key protective factors, their dynamic and longitudinal interplay in this specific adolescent population remains poorly understood. This three-wave longitudinal study investigates the temporal precedence and potential causal pathways among resilience, P-MIL, and depressive symptoms.
Methods:
Over a three-month period, 333 students from secondary vocational schools in Beijing completed validated self-report measures of resilience, P-MIL, and depressive symptoms at three time points with one-month intervals. Cross-lagged panel modeling (CLPM) was used to analyze the longitudinal, bidirectional relationships between these constructs while controlling for stability effects.
Results:
The analysis revealed a robust reciprocal negative relationship between resilience and depression across waves. Resilience consistently emerged as a significant positive predictor of subsequent levels of P-MIL. Most notably, and contrary to prevailing theoretical models, no significant cross-lagged paths were found between P-MIL and depressive symptoms in either direction, indicating a lack of longitudinal predictive association.
Conclusions:
These findings challenge the established notion that the P-MIL directly functions as a protective buffer against depression among vocational students. Instead, resilience is identified as the central, active agent that both mitigates depressive symptoms and facilitates the development of meaning. This evidence suggests a paradigm shift for targeted interventions, advocating for the primacy of resilience-building programs over approaches that primarily aim to enhance abstract life meaning in this educational context.
