Abstract:
Compartment syndrome encompasses a spectrum of disease. The most recognized subset of compartment syndrome is acute traumatic compartment syndrome, which is typically readily diagnosed by trained practitioners. A less-known type of compartment syndrome is acute exertional compartment syndrome, as the clinical presentation is secondary to heavy activity rather than trauma, can be isolated to a single muscle, and does not resolve with rest and supportive care. Acute exertional compartment syndrome is often complicated by a delay in diagnosis due to a lack of awareness on the subject. We present a case of acute exertional compartment syndrome of the extensor carpi ulnaris muscle treated with isolated muscle fasciotomy with symptom resolution. Awareness of the diagnosis and treatment allows for improved patient outcomes.
