Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess pregnancy and kidney outcomes in women with primary glomerular diseases at a tertiary center in India.

  • Retrospective review of medical records from 2012-2022.
  • Inclusion of 32 women (44 pregnancies) aged 18-45 with biopsy-confirmed primary glomerular disease.
  • Comparison of pregnancy outcomes and kidney outcomes (relapse, progression) between pregnant women and non-pregnant controls.

Main Results:

  • 56.8% of pregnancies resulted in live births; 40% of these were preterm and 64% had intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR).
  • Pre-eclampsia occurred in 24% of pregnancies, and 32% experienced kidney disease relapse.
  • Pregnancy was not associated with long-term kidney disease progression (aHR 1.4; 95% CI, 0.2-9.0).

Conclusions:

  • Pregnancy in women with primary glomerular diseases is linked to adverse maternal and fetal outcomes, including significant IUGR risk.
  • Despite adverse pregnancy outcomes, pregnancy did not negatively affect long-term kidney outcomes in this cohort.
  • Findings underscore the need for careful management of pregnancy in women with primary glomerular diseases, especially in resource-limited settings.
