Abstract:
Lithium-ion batteries dominate the portable energy storage landscape, yet their energy density needs to be improved to meet the demands from advanced applications. Although sacrificial additives can effectively elevate the operating voltage of batteries, the functional potential of their chemical by-products has been largely overlooked. Here, we report trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate (TMSOTF) as a multifunctional additive. It not only scavenges detrimental agents but also directs the by-products to form a protective interphase. This strategy enables LiCoO2||Li cells to maintain 79.82% capacity after 200 cycles (3.0-4.65 V) with only 1 wt% additive, a substantial improvement over conventional electrolytes. This work pioneers a byproduct-utilization paradigm for designing next-generation sacrificial additives.

Multiple Voltage Sources
In series, the positive terminal of one battery is connected to the negative terminal of another battery. Hence, the voltage of each battery is added to give the net voltage, which is increased because each battery boosts the electrons that enter it. The same current flows through each battery because they are connected in series.

Voltaic/Galvanic Cells
Spontaneous redox reactions occur abundantly in nature. The chemical reaction occurring in a disposable AA battery powering our remote controls is one such example of a spontaneous redox reaction. Another example is the immersion of coiled copper wire into an aqueous silver nitrate solution. The reaction shows a gradual, visually impressive color change from colorless to bright blue and the formation of a grey precipitate on the copper wire. In this experiment,...
