Background:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of case-based situational simulation teaching using a virtual patient for clinical thinking training in dentition defect restoration.

  • A self before-and-after control study involved 112 dental undergraduates.
  • Virtual patients provided case information via role-playing; students completed medical records pre- and post-simulation.
  • Teacher assessments covered diagnosis, treatment planning, and denture design, alongside student questionnaire feedback.

  • Significant improvements (p<0.05) were observed in medical record scores post-simulation.
  • Proportions of students scoring >27 in treatment planning and denture design increased from 0% to 37.27% and 40.91%, respectively.

  • Case-based situational simulation with virtual patients positively impacts students' clinical thinking regarding dentition defects.
  • This teaching method helps students minimize medical record errors and enhance the quality of RPD treatment plans.
