Weaponization of energy: a qualitative analysis exploring the lived experiences of Polish residents in their homes

Abstract:
The 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine operationalized the weaponization of energy, a global tool of coercion exacerbated by climate change. This exploratory study examines the impact of this tactic among residents of Wrocław, Poland, utilizing the weathering hypothesis to examine health and well-being. Drawing from a larger project, this analysis focuses on a sub-sample of nine participants who identified the Russian invasion of Ukraine as the primary driver of their stressors. Through photovoice and semi-structured interviews, the data reveal how the weaponization of energy is not just a strategy, but a biopsychosocial toxicant. The main themes revealed how the energy crisis overwhelmed participant housing systems, forced individuals into fear-based poverty, and strained community processes. Participants described stress stemming from countering extreme temperatures and weather resulting from climate change. These attacks extend beyond Ukrainian borders, directly impacting households in Poland. Relying on centralized energy leaves Polish residents vulnerable to these mechanisms. This exploration argues that transitioning to localized renewable systems is essential for energy independence, specifically weatherization. Adopting these systems cultivates ecological intelligence, equipping communities with the necessary mindset to resist foreign control, mitigate the consequences of climate change, and protect their own health and well-being.
