Cognitive Development During Adulthood01:30

Cognitive Development During Adulthood

1.4K
Cognitive development continues throughout adulthood, undergoing significant shifts across early, middle, and late stages. Individual transition occurs from adolescent idealism to pragmatic and adaptable thinking in early adulthood. During this period, individuals learn to integrate personal beliefs with the recognition that other perspectives are equally valid. Exposure to the complexities of modern society, diverse experiences, and higher education contribute to this adaptive thought process,...

Treatment Resistant Cancers02:56

Treatment Resistant Cancers

2.6K
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. A cancer cell is genetically unstable and hence can mutate faster. They can also modify their microenvironment and escape immune surveillance. The difficulties in treating cancer are further compounded by the emergence of rapid resistance to anticancer drugs. The most common ways to attain resistance in cancer cells include alteration in drug transport and metabolism, modification of drug target, elevated DNA damage response, or...

Alzheimer's Disease: Treatment01:22

Alzheimer's Disease: Treatment

1.2K
Alzheimer's Disease (AD), a neurodegenerative disorder, is pathologically identified by amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles composed of tau protein. AD pharmacotherapy aims to manage cognitive symptoms, delay disease progression, and treat behavioral symptoms. The treatment is primarily symptomatic and palliative, with no definitive disease-modifying therapy available. Cholinesterase inhibitors, including donepezil (Aricept), rivastigmine (Exelon), and galantamine (Razadyne), are...

Summary

This pilot study found that the eReCog web-based program is a feasible and acceptable intervention for improving cognitive function in cancer survivors. Further research is warranted to confirm its efficacy in a larger trial.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Neuroscience
  • Rehabilitation Medicine

Background:

  • Cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) significantly impacts survivors' quality of life and daily functioning.
  • CRCI can persist long after cancer treatment, affecting daily activities and return to work.
  • Existing interventions for CRCI have limitations, necessitating novel approaches.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the feasibility and acceptability of a web-based cognitive rehabilitation program, eReCog, for individuals with perceived cognitive difficulties post-chemotherapy.
  • To explore the potential efficacy of eReCog in improving cognitive function.
  • To gather data for a definitive, large-scale trial.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized pilot study design with one-to-one allocation to either usual care or eReCog plus usual care.
  • The eReCog program involved a 4-week online intervention based on cognitive behavioral therapy principles.
  • Feasibility was measured by recruitment and retention rates; efficacy was assessed using neuropsychological tests and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs).

Main Results:

  • Recruitment (3.8 patients/month) and retention (95%) rates met predefined feasibility criteria.
  • The eReCog program demonstrated high adherence, usability, and participant motivation.
  • Preliminary efficacy data showed a large difference favoring eReCog in processing speed, with medium differences in other measures.

Conclusions:

  • The study met its primary feasibility objectives, indicating that a definitive trial of eReCog is warranted.
  • eReCog was found to be acceptable to the study population, supporting its use in future research.
  • Positive trends in cognitive outcomes suggest eReCog may offer benefits for cancer survivors experiencing CRCI.
