We report a light-driven, transition-metal-free annulative π-extension (APEX) that affords phenanthrenes in up to 95% yield with high regioselectivity. This anion-π-initiated, O2-mediated one-pot method avoids pre-functionalization, tolerates diverse substituents, and also enables access to naphthalene derivatives.
