The increasing propene demand has accelerated the development of on-purpose propane dehydrogenation (PDH) technologies. Because of rapid catalyst deactivation caused by the high operating temperature, frequent catalyst regeneration cycles are required in industrial processes. While efficient PtGa-based PDH catalysts have been developed, the origin of the promotional effect of Si and the need for only small amounts of Pt to improve the catalyst regenerability are not fully understood. Herein, we find that incorporating Si and decreasing the Pt loading in Si-containing PtGa catalyst supported on alumina, that is prepared via a surface organometallic chemistry approach, improves both stability and regenerability of catalysts. Detailed analyses of in situ/operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy confirm that the increased PDH performances correlate with a regeneration of the Pt-Ga interaction due to enhanced Pt-Ga redox dynamics.

Reduction of Alkenes: Catalytic Hydrogenation
Metals like palladium, platinum, and nickel are commonly used in their solid forms — fine powder on an inert surface. As these catalysts remain insoluble in the reaction mixture, they are referred to as heterogeneous catalysts.

Reduction of Alkenes: Asymmetric Catalytic Hydrogenation
The metal catalyst used can be either heterogeneous or homogeneous. When hydrogenation of an alkene generates a chiral center, a pair of enantiomeric products is expected to form. However, an enantiomeric excess of one of the products can be facilitated using an enantioselective reaction or an...
Reduction of Alkynes to cis-Alkenes: Catalytic Hydrogenation
Like alkenes, alkynes can be reduced to alkanes in the presence of transition metal catalysts such as Pt, Pd, or Ni. The reaction involves two sequential syn additions of hydrogen via a cis-alkene intermediate.
