Optimizing research-to-practice translation time through the mountain model: A Delphi study

Background:
The Mountain Model (MM) for evidence-based practice quality improvement (EBPQI) is the first published framework to formally merge evidence-based practice (EBP) and quality improvement (QI) paradigms. The primary focus of the framework is to guide practitioners with translating research for sustained practice improvements.
Purpose:
Empirically validate the process outlined by the MM that facilitates efficient translation of research into practice.
Methods:
A Delphi study of currently practicing EBP and QI experts spanning eight health care disciplines was conducted with three iterative rounds.
Findings:
The panel reached consensus on 18 of 22 items. The MM was ranked as high perceived value with agreement that use of the MM is likely to reduce research-to-practice translation time. Two potential revisions to the MM included an interdisciplinary focus and identification of a local problem.
Discussion:
Understanding the value of the MM for EBPQI, as a new guide for research translation, has the potential to create synergies across the evidence continuum with scalable, transferable health care improvements.
