A recent study in the British Journal of Anaesthesia analysed self-harm after noncardiac surgery among more than 1 million patients in a large public data database from New York State. The study raises awareness of the increased risk of suicidal behaviour after surgery, an under-reported and under-studied postoperative outcome. Efforts towards a better understanding of perioperative mental health are necessary to understand and prevent perioperative self-harm.
