The World Health Organization (WHO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations based in Geneva. The WHO has many initiatives that center around health. Primarily, they lead global efforts to expand universal health coverage using science-based policies and programs. They are also responsible for shaping health research agendas and developing norms and standards.

Bias in Epidemiological Studies01:29

Bias in Epidemiological Studies

1.6K
Biases can arise at various stages of research, from study design and data collection to analysis and interpretation. Recognizing and addressing these biases is essential to ensure the validity and reliability of epidemiological findings.Broadly speaking, biases in epidemiology fall into three main categories: selection bias, information bias, and confounding. A more detailed description of possible biases is:

Factors Affecting Illness01:18

Factors Affecting Illness

5.4K
When a person's physical, emotional, intellectual, social development or spiritual functioning is compromised, this deviation from a healthy normal state is called illness. Illness creates stress that in turn harms individuals. Irritation, anger, denial, hopelessness, and fear are behavioral and emotional changes an individual experiences in the phases of illness. A variety of factors influence a person's health and well-being.
For instance, risk factors are connected to illness,...

Primary Healthcare Services

Primary care promotes wellness and prevents disease. This care includes health promotion, education, protection (such as immunizations), early disease screening, and environmental considerations. Settings providing this type of healthcare include physician offices, public health clinics, school nursing, and community health nursing.

Methods Of Healthcare Delivery System

3.9K
At the different levels of the healthcare system, we see varying methods of healthcare used. These methods include managed care systems, case management, and primary healthcare.
Managed Care System:
The managed care system is designed to control the cost while maintaining the quality of care. The patient's care from admission to discharge is planned by the primary care provider or the case manager, also known as the gatekeeper. In a managed care system, the number of care providers is...

Area of Science:

  • Health Services Research
  • Global Health
  • Health Economics

Background:

  • Accurate estimation of health consultation duration is vital for assessing diagnostic quality, workforce planning, and global service costing.
  • Variability in visit times can be influenced by healthcare worker type, service delivery models, and clinical complexity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review and synthesize data on health care visit times globally.
  • To identify factors modifying health care visit durations, including service delivery platforms and healthcare worker types.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic review and meta-analysis of 422 studies were conducted across seven databases and grey literature.
  • Data extraction, quality appraisal, and meta-analysis were performed, with subgroup analysis and meta-regression exploring heterogeneity.

Main Results:

  • The average health care visit time, excluding procedures, was 19.2 minutes (95% CI: 16.7-21.6 minutes).
  • Significant variations in visit times were observed based on country income classification, region, service delivery platform, health worker type, and telemedicine use.
  • Meta-regression models identified country income, telemedicine, and service delivery platform as significant factors influencing visit times.

Conclusions:

  • Estimated variations in health care visit times provide evidence for appraising global health systems, informing workforce planning, and service costing.
  • Further research is needed to address significant evidence gaps in visit times, particularly in lower-income countries, as most studies originated from high and upper-middle income nations.
