Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze funding patterns and career trajectories of NIH-funded OHNS faculty.
  • To identify factors influencing research independence and funding success in OHNS.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study analyzing NIH RePORTER data and a national survey of OHNS faculty.
  • Examined time to R01-equivalent funding, grant diversity by degree (MD, PhD, dual-degree), and training program impact.

Main Results:

  • PhD faculty (52%) showed greater grant diversity and earlier R01-equivalent funding (7.5 years) compared to MDs (9.5 years).
  • MD and dual-degree faculty were more likely to secure K awards and transition to R01 funding.
  • Participation in T32/R25 programs reduced time to R01 funding by 2.5 years; basic scientists were 4x more likely to get K awards.

Conclusions:

  • While OHNS PhD faculty achieve early and diverse funding, structured training programs and basic science involvement enhance MD faculty funding success.
  • Strategies at institutional and training levels can accelerate research independence and bolster the OHNS surgeon-scientist pipeline.
