Functionality in patients over 60years of age with distal radius fracture treated with and without surgery: scoping

Background:
Distal radius fracture is the most common in women over 50years, accounting for up to 18% of all fractures in the elderly. The objective of this study is to compare the functional results of patients over 60years with distal radius fracture after conservative treatment versus surgical treatment.
Methods:
A review of the literature of articles published between 2015 and 2022 related to the PICO question posed «Functionality in patients over 60years of age with distal radius fracture with conservative treatment compared with surgical treatment». The eligibility criteria were: population over 60years old, post-management functionality such as pain, grip strength, alignment, need for a new procedure, among others.
Results:
The search generated 119 articles, and after filtering for duplication, title and abstract or that did not comply with inclusion criteria. The remaining 10 articles met the eligibility criteria, applied conservative or surgical management for distal radius fractures in a population over 60years of age and answered the research question posed.
Conclusion:
The results reported are similar in terms of recovery of functionality of the wrist and hand in these patients after follow-up, however, most of the authors found that patients had lower scores on the DASH scale (less disability) and better grip strength in patients subjected to open reduction and internal fixation with palmar plate.
