[Time trend analysis of colostomy-related hospitalizations and mortality in Brazil, 2012-2022]

The scope of this study was to analyze the temporal trends of hospitalizations and mortality due to colostomies in Brazilian regions, according to sex and age group, from 2012 to 2022, based on the annual percentage change (APC) and average annual percentage change (AAPC). In the period analyzed, Brazil recorded 60,291 hospitalizations for colostomies and 7,806 deaths associated with the procedure. A higher number of hospitalizations was observed in males (52.5%). The Southeast presented the highest number of hospitalizations (29,735) and deaths (4,108), followed by the Northeast with 11,573 and 1,447 respectively. Temporal trend analysis showed an increase in the number of hospitalizations among males, particularly in the Northeast region (AAPC: 3.36%; 95%CI: 0.68; 6.12) and females in the North region (AAPC: 6.68%; 95%CI: 1.48;5.92). Regarding age groups, the greatest annual increase was observed among females aged 60-69 (AAPC: 3.47%; 95%CI: 1.58;5.39). The results indicate high rates of hospitalizations for colostomy and procedure-related mortality, with an increasing trend over the period analyzed, along with regional differences by sex and age. These findings highlight the need for public health actions focused on the main causes of colostomy in the adult population.
