Measurement of stopping power of UO2 for alpha particles

Abstract:
The stopping power of UO2 for alpha particles was determined in the energy range of 1.5-7.0 MeV using a technique based on the analysis of the anomalies in elastic backscattering spectra caused by the resonance structure in the 16O(α,α0)16O cross-section. The stopping power data obtained were validated through a benchmarking procedure consisting in the acquisition of the spectrum of alpha particles emitted from a homogeneous thick UO2 sample due to the radioactive decay of uranium, followed by its simulation. It is demonstrated that SRIM and ASTAR underestimate these data by up to 4.9% and 5.6%, respectively.
