Abstract:
Post-silking high temperature constrains maize yield and quality. Maintaining leaf stay-green under high temperature is essential for sustaining yield, yet its association with grain quality remains unclear. Three waxy maize inbred lines with different leaf stay-green levels (W19, high; W58, middle; W27, low) were exposed to post-silking high temperature. High temperature reduced kernel weight and starch content in W27 by 44.1% and 45.7%, respectively, whereas W58 and W19 remained stable. Under high temperature, W19 maintained the largest granule size, the highest proportion of B1 chains, and the lowest relative crystallinity. In contrast, W27 showed the smallest granule size, the lowest proportion of B1 chains, and the highest relative crystallinity, with W58 intermediate. Granule size and chain-length distribution were altered in W27 and W58 but stable in W19. These results demonstrate that leaf stay-green preserves starch structural integrity under high temperature and stabilizes starch quality.
