Electronic AKI alerts at a crossroads: is it time to move on?

Abstract:
Electronic alerts are widely used to identify episodes of acute kidney injury, but evidence for their effectiveness has been conflicting. Xie et al. used real-world data to evaluate the impact of a nationwide acute kidney injury electronic alert program and found no meaningful improvement in clinical outcomes. Findings were consistent across hospital and community settings, between passive and interruptive alert types, and across a range of patient subgroups, and were in keeping with results from prior randomized trials.
